Fishing in the Dark was created to help military veterans who suffer from PTSD. Our mission is to provide disabled veterans with an opportunity to have an expense free day of bass fishing. We want to spread the message of how having a hobby can positively impact the lives of those with PTSD. We understand that Fishing in the Dark will not be the solution for every veteran, but if we can help prevent one veteran from committing suicide, then all of our work has been worth it. At least 22 veterans a day are giving up on their battle with PTSD. Fishing allows the mind to have something positive to focus on. It can help veterans heal psychologically, emotionally, and even physically. Having an outlet to focus your time and energy on can keep suicidal thoughts and actions at bay. This is why every veteran that goes out with Fishing in the Dark will be provided with fishing equipment to continue fishing on their own time. This kit will include a rod, reel, tackle and a fishing box to store it all in! If a veteran does not know how to fish, they will be provided with simple easy instructions to get them started.
Fishing will only help so much. While we use fishing as a tool to ensure our mental health is where it should be, it is not a catch all. There will be times that you need more assistance than FITD is able to provide. Luckily, we have lived those experiences and know what it is like in those moments. We have also partnered with amazing mental health professionals in the community. Whether you need a stranger to listen to things you don't want to tell those close to you or something more intensive we are here for you. Reach out to us and we will talk to you about anything.
This is where Fishing In The Dark comes in. Giving Veterans an outlet is the key to maintaining a healthy and thriving lifestyle. Taking the time to ensure you are taken care of with your mental health in order is paramount to success. This not only applies to you but your family as well. You cannot lead your group without having your mind right. Maintenance is an infinitely easier path than letting yourself suffer until it becomes a bigger problem. Find the thing that allows you to have the moments of calm/peace. Fishing is our specialty but it could be anything for you.
